Golden Square will be without 2019 Derrick Filo Medal winner Jake Thrum after he earned a berth on Geelong's VFL list for 2020.
The 23-year-old will align himself with Geelong-based club Bell Park and departs the Dogs after playing 80 senior games.
Jake Thrum's move to Geelong comes as his younger brother, Will, joins the Bulldogs from Central Murray Football League club Cohuna.
"We're really sad to see Jake leaving the club because he's a terrific player and a terrific person,'' Golden Square coach Bernie Haberman said.
"He goes with our blessing and he deserves a chance at VFL level.
"I think he'll take the next step because every time he's gone up a level with his football he's performed."
After making the move from Cohuna to Golden Square at the end of 2015, Jake Thrum started with the Dogs as a small defender.
He moved up the ground to the wing and midfield where he became a goal scoring avenue for the Dogs.
Thrum started last May's inter-league clash with Outer East at the QEO on the bench.
Once on the field he dominated, with his hard-running on the open spaces of the QEO a highlight.
He kicked one goal, had a swag of possessions and was a worthy winner of the Derrick Filo Medal as the BFNL's best player.
"Geelong is really keen on him and they've had a fair turnover of players on their VFL list,'' Haberman said.
"Hopefully, he gets a chance early in the season to show his wares.
"It hurts our chances because he makes our club better, but it's fantastic for Jake."
Jake is renowned for his outstanding running ability and his precise left-foot kicking. Will is a right-footer, but Haberman said there are some similarities between the siblings.
"Will is a bit taller and has a bit more meat on his bones, but he has good running ability like Jake,'' Haberman said.
"I don't want to put pressure on him, but I think he has the natural attributes to develop into a good footballer. He's really committed and takes his footy seriously which is a lot like his brother."
Golden Square will play practice matches against Seymour (March 21) and East Point (March 28) before its round one clash with Kangaroo Flat on Good Friday.
