The Melbourne-based owner was alerted as alleged offender entered their weekend retreat and called police.
Officers arrived at 10.30pm and found the man hiding behind a couch in the living room, Castlemaine's Acting Sergeant Tim Elliott said.
"Obviously, that homeowner has spent so much money on a security system and it has paid dividends," he said.
"The man has triggered one alert when he first entered the property and another when he entered the building itself."
The 44-year-old man has been remanded in custody and will face burglary-related offences, Acting Sergeant Elliott said.
