The 86-year-olds will have a low-key affair to celebrate their 65^th wedding anniversary on Wednesday.

"Time goes quickly," Mr McKenzie said.

The two met at a dance at View Street in Bendigo when they were just 19 years old.

"Of course I was attracted to her and her looks, naturally enough," Mr McKenzie said. "It blossomed from then on."

When they were 21 years old, they married at Bendigo's Sacred Heart Cathedral. There isn't too much they remember from the day - just one particular feature.

"It was awful," Mrs McKenzie said. "We just had awful rain."

The couple, who were both born and raised in Bendigo, have built a life together in the regional city.

Mrs McKenzie worked for 33 years in Bendigo's fashion industry, while Mr McKenzie spent almost four decades at Sandhurst Dairies.

They also created a small family together of two daughters and a son. Mr McKenzie said some of their fondest memories come from their regular summer holidays in the Mornington Peninsula.

"We used to have great times going down to Rosebud," Mr McKenzie said. "We used to stop at the foreshore and we used to rent the units down there.

"They were very good around there. Rosebud was crowded with people and you could have a good time."

The McKenzie's have also travelled overseas a number of times, including a cruise around Noumea, and trips to China and the Philippines.

But they always returned back to the home in Bendigo they bought 60 years ago.

The couple like to share their past with their children. The special cake topper that sat proudly upon their own wedding cake was also placed on their daughters' wedding cakes.

"It has always been well looked after," daughter Sandra Turnbull said. "It has this big glass dome and we'll put the dome back over it.

"We'll put it back in a safe spot for the next wedding."

That wedding could come from one of the couple's six grandchildren.

"When we get the grandchildren, they are just lovely," Mrs McKenzie said.

The couple agree that in their 65 years of marriage there have been some fights. But Mr McKenzie said there was one thing couples should always do.

"Just forgive and forget," Mr McKenzie said.
