PEOPLE in regional cities like Bendigo are paying more for child care services than other parts of the country, a government report shows.

The Productivity Commission released its annual report into Early Childhood Education and Care.
It found that on average, 50 hours of centre-based day care services cost families in inner regional areas $521 per week in 2019. That was up from $499 in 2018 and $487 in 2017.
The cost was also higher than other states. In inner regional areas in Queensland, the cost was $458 for 50 hours of day care, while for inner regional Tasmania, the cost was $452.
In remote areas of Victoria, the cost of child care is also increasing year-on-year.
The report showed families in outer regional and remote areas were spending $463 for the 50 hours of centre-based day care in 2019, compared to $448 the previous year.
Child care costs in Victoria's remote and outer regional areas have increased by more than $120 in the past decade.
The costs were also higher than remote areas in other states. In NSW, families paid $435 for the week of centre-based child care services.
Families in Queensland also paid $440 for the 50 hours, while those in Tasmania only paid $417.
The latest government data comes after the Child Care in Australia report showed the average cost of child care in Bendigo rose by 5.3 per cent in a year.
Bendigo families were paying $9.73 an hour in December 2018.
While it was marginally cheaper in the Castlemaine, Heathcote and Kyneton area at $9.68 an hour, this represented a 9.5 per cent increase over a year.
Meanwhile, in the Macedon Ranges the average hourly child care cost rose to $9.71, an increase of 7 per cent.
