The tender for construction of a 65 metre retaining wall will go out in February.
Campaspe Shire Council Infrastructure Services general manager Jason Deller said the wall would ensure the riverbank stayed where it needed to be.
Mr Deller said the retaining wall would mean future development on the land was possible, maximising the limited available space in the port.
He said erosion was the reason for the works themselves, with a 2016 flood undermining and destabilising the existing wall.
Mr Deller said the wall would protect the bank from the rising and falling of the river.
The wall will be built from concrete and steel, clad with a timber fascia to maintain the historic appearance of the port.
Construction on the wall is expected to begin in late April, and take about three months.
