More than two years ago the Victorian government allocated $625,000 for work on the northern intersection of the Wimmera Highway and the Bridgewater-Maldon Road at Newbridge, as part of the 2017-18 budget.
That intersection was the scene of a crash involving two motorcycles on the afternoon of Saturday, January 11, from which two men were taken to hospital.
Police said at the time that they were investigating whether the design of the intersection played a role in the crash.
Then on Tuesday, January 14, a woman suffered minor injuries when her vehicle collided with a truck at the same site.
Regional Roads Victoria's acting Northern regional director, Barry Green, said investigations were under way into the most recent crashes to determine whether safety upgrades were appropriate at the intersection.
RRV will consider the outcomes of these investigations before any designs are progressed.
Mr Green explained the delay since the announcement of the funding for the upgrade works.
"When prioritising projects, we have to take a holistic view of the network, considering factors like traffic volumes, freight usage, safety history and the existing condition of the road," he said.
"Sometimes this can mean prioritising works on a highly trafficked route over a smaller arterial road."
