Police want to speak to a mystery caller who has potentially crucial information about a collision at Wedderburn that killed a pedestrian and his guide dog.
Ray Meadows, 63, and his guide dog Gerry died when they were struck by a Toyota Corolla on the Calder Highway outside their home about 6.40am on June 2 last year.
The driver, a 22-year-old man, spoke to police at the scene and has been assisting with enquiries.
A few weeks after the tragedy, a caller provided information about the collision to Crime Stoppers.
Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Brendan Eames-Mayer said this information differed to what the driver involved gave police.
He said detectives wanted to speak to this caller to clarify and validate their information.
Despite the efforts of detectives over the past several months, the caller has not been found.
Detective Acting Sergeant Eames-Mayer said the caller could provide information about whether a criminal offence had occurred.
He said Mr Meadows was a "very able" man, who wore a high-visibility vest with flashing lights on his daily walks into town.
"Ray had done this walk every day for the last 15 years," Detective Acting Sergeant Eames-Mayer said.
He was walking with Gerry, the long-awaited guide dog he had been partnered with just a few months before.
The collision occurred on the Bendigo side of Wedderburn, a couple of kilometres out of the town.
Mr Meadows' widow Valma said her husband of 13 years was very safety conscious and would not walk beyond the side of the road.
"He would have just got outside the gate, he would have heard a car have coming, and he would have stopped. He always stops and lets the cars go by," she said.
She said he was walking into town to go to the gym on the day of his death, as he did every day of the week.
Mrs Meadows described her husband as a very caring person, someone who liked to dress well, enjoyed detecting and loved his audio books.
"Everyone loved him and he was a fantastic husband," Mrs Meadows said.
He was a father of three and grandfather of six, whom he loved.
Mr Meadows and Gerry bonded the first minute they met, Mrs Meadows said, and would play together on the floor.
Police have released footage of Mr Meadows walking with Gerry in the days prior to the collision.
"He's well-known in the community and we're hoping this footage will spark people's memories and thoughts about what happened back in June 2019," Detective Acting Sergeant Eames-Mayer said.
Mrs Meadows thanked the police for their efforts and asked anyone with information to come forward.
Anyone who saw the collision, has dash cam footage or has any information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report online.
