IT WAS not quite a hometown win, but Angels Breath's victory in the opening race at Wedderburn on Sunday was the next best thing.

The five-year-old mare is trained 20 minutes down the road at Inglewood, by long-serving former Wedderburn Harness Racing Club president and secretary Trevor Ralph.
He was naturally delighted to be in the winner's circle on cup day.
Angels Breath is the lone horse trained by Ralph, who runs Inglewood's licensed post office.
The win was the trotting mare's third in 39 careers starts, which have also yielded seven second placings and eight thirds.
Angels Breath is a full-sister to Rumbustious, who provided Ralph with one of his most memorable wins as a trainer in the 2015 Wedderburn Trotters Cup.
While there was no cup up for grabs for Ralph on Sunday, the win was every bit as a meaningful for the Inglewood trainer.
"It was nice to win another race with Rambustious' full-sister," he said.
"I've been a bit lucky over the years at Wedderburn. One year I won three races and they only had five meetings, so winning three was a bit of an achievement, especially when you only have a couple of horses in work.
"It's a bit of fun."
Ralph, a past secretary of the Victorian Square Trotters Association, has plenty to look forward to, with the win qualifying Angels Breath for the Group 2 series final at Tabcorp Park Melton this Saturday night.
"She has got a lot of ability, but he always seems to run into one better than her," he said.
"Her manners weren't real flash early in her career, it took a while to get her sorted out.
"She did run second in a Group 1 race as a three-year-old and probably should have won it. She galloped just after the start and lost 100 metres and only got beaten by a neck.
"They were a pretty even bunch of horses (on Sunday) and she got that bit of luck she doesn't normally get.
"It would be nice to get a few more wins with him.
"Saturday's race will be tough, she'll be up against a combination of classes and she' only a restricted class horse. We'll be giving away a fair bit of class and might just be making up the numbers.
"Anyway, it's great to get down to Melton for a Group 2 race and see how we go."
Angels Breath will again be driven by Waanyarra's Peter Sanderson, who has been in the sulky for all 39 of the mare's starts.
In other highlights from Sunday, the $14,500 Wedderburn Pacing Cup was won by the Jess Tubbs-trained Little Peanut, while Rory Mchinson won the $14,500 Wedderburn Trotters Cup for trainer Mick Blackmore.
There was success for Heathcote trainer Scott Rains and local drivers Haydon Gray and Shannon O'Sullivan.
Rains and Gray combined to win the E.T. and D.M. Stephenson Memorial Pace with the four-year-old gelding Illawong Jovial, while O'Sullivan capped a successful weekend with a win aboard the Susan Hunter-trained Monash.
The 20-year-old reinswoman scored a win at Ballarat on Saturday night with Neangar Guy, who is trained by her father Jim O'Sullivan.
