MORE CRICKET - Giri smashes third century in four hits for Arnold
EMU Valley's Bendigo Country Week division one campaign is off to a flying start after beating Grassmere with more than half its overs left unused in Sunday's carnival opener at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
After bowling Grassmere out for 107 Emu Valley took just 24.5 overs to post 5-108 and win its opening game of the carnival for just the second time in its six years since its division one promotion.
Emu Valley shared its wickets around, with Harry Whittle (3-13), Rhys Webb (3-18) and Nick Skeen (2-34) all taking multiples after Grassmere, which has been promoted from division two, won the toss and batted.
Only opener Phillip Edwards (39) made more than 20 for Grassmere, which was all out in the 39th over.
Emu Valley hit a hurdle in its chase when it fell from 0-35 to 3-38, but had enough contributions throughout to get the job done, with Whittle (24 n.o.), Greg Thomas (17), Alex Gorrie (17), David Blume (16) and Lachlan Brook (13) all contributing double figure scores and ensuring the game ended before the QEO lights had the chance to take effect.
Tyson Umbers (2-30) was the only multiple wicket-taker for Grassmere.
The carnival gets under way for the other 10 teams across the two divisions on Monday.
Goulburn Murray is the defending division one premier.
