Visibility was lower at the city's airport than in Melbourne, which has experienced worse air quality over the past weeks.

The smoke is likely to hang over Bendigo during the weekend, possibly clearing on Monday.

Visibility was at about eight kilometres at Bendigo Airport on Friday, dropping down to seven at 1pm. On a clear day visibility is normally 40-50 kilometres.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said showers and storms forecast for Monday might clear the air.

Mr Stewart said south easterly winds had pushed fire smoke up over northern Victoria, including Bendigo.

The Bendigo Health emergency department has seen a slight increase in the number of patients presenting with shortness of breath and coughing over the past week.

Authorities first warned that smoke could damage Victorians health 11 days ago, as haze from East Gippsland bushfires blew across the state.

Mr Stewart said the strength of smoke haze in certain areas depended on factors like topography and atmospheric stability.

He said haze was likely to recur as long as the fires were burning.
