It began like any other bushfire fundraiser. But organiser Cate Mercer decided she wanted to create something that would allow people to connect with each other.

Eight artists from the Castlemaine community will perform, including poets and singer songwriters.

Ms Mercer said music was an incredible way to bring up emotion. She said the concert would be like emotional healing, giving space and using music as a medium for expression.

"I really feel that in some ways this is what we all need to do ... is to share our grief, to connect," she said.

"There are just so many issues that these fires, aside from the fires themselves, are bringing up.

"I just wanted to create something that would create a space for us all to come together to share the pain."

Ms Mercer said everyone was affected by the fires, despite central Victoria's escape from serious damage so far this danger season.

At least 28 people have died, hundreds of homes have been lost and milllions of animals have lost their lives since the current fire season began.

Ms Mercer said just about everybody was in some way connected to the fire ravaged areas.

"We are all feeling it. It doesn't matter that it's not happening right here," she said.

And Ms Mercer said she believed that everyone needed to share their grief. She pointed to different stages of grief, often theorised as anger, denial, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Human beings also always wanted to fix things, she said. When they couldn't, it could be extremely frustrating.

Ms Mercer said the feeling was one of: "What can we do?"

"That's why there's so many people donating money," she said.

"Because we've got to help somehow."

Ms Mercer will personally ask people to connect with someone they've never spoken to before at the event.

"We all know if we reach out to other people it can help us a lot, she said.

"It's hard to do it, it's hard for me to do it, but it's an incredible thing when you do.

"We're all a bit lost, and it's just about providing a space for us to come together and hopefully help each other."
