Council staff undertook a change of decor in Hargreaves Mall yesterday with 100 Chinese lanterns being installed over the green space in the centre of the mall.
The lanterns will help celebrate the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Rat.
The rat ranks first on the Chinese zodiac signs and is characterised by its spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, felxibility and vitality.
As well as celebrating, the lanterns also acknowledge Bendigo's strong Chinese history and provide a colourful display as the city centre prepares to host a range of Chinese New Year celebrations.
Celebrations will be held at Dai Gum San on January 25 when the Bendigo Chinese Association will host its Lunar New Year Festival with flying dragon Fei Loong, the Plum Blossom Dancing and BCA Lion teams.
Celebrations will also take place in Hargreaves Mall on February 7. Festivities helping celebrate Chinese New Year in Bendigo traditionally include markets, dancing and music.
