All money raised from special collections during Masses on the Australia Day weekend will go to the St Vincent de Paul bushfire appeal.
"This concrete response can complement the work already taking place on the ground, led by governments and first responders, and augmented by faith communities and other groups," Bishop Mackinlay said.
The Sandhurst diocese includes Bendigo and stretches into north-east Victoria, including communities that have been affected by the fires devastating large swathes of the country.
Bishop Mackinlay has also urged political and community leaders to "continue efforts to identify and respond to the underlying causes that have contributed to the heightened risks we are facing this summer".
