Monday:
A TREE bringing down power lines caused a fire in Huntly that threatened houses on Saturday, investigators say.
Country Fire Authority District 02 Commander Mick Hembrow said the tree brought down the power lines during a wind change on Saturday.
Mr Hembrow said Energy Safe Victoria had visited the scene and found the trees were within guidelines.
The fire began about 3pm. It was controlled by 6pm, burning around 140 hectares.
Forty CFA tankers, 15 CFA support and 25 Forest Fire Management Victoria units attended the scene.
Mr Hembrow said a lot of the burnt land took place in Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning land beside the Bendigo Creek.
He said only four landowners were affected and no structures or stock were damaged or destroyed.
"We were able to put quite a number of trucks on it relatively quickly for the area, which has then gone in our favour to be able to attack the fire," he said.
FFMVic incident controller Jeff Wilkie said a community revegetation sites along the creek had been burnt, causing loss of trees and habitat.
Mr Wilkie said crews would be at the site all week blacking out.
Energy Safe Victoria and Powercor have been contacted for comment.
