Martin's two-under par 69 was good enough for a tie for 21st after day one - four shots behind joint leaders Takumi Kanaya and Chun-An Yu.
Fellow Bendigo professional Lucas Herbert played in the afternoon when the conditions were tougher and shot a four-over par 75 to be in a tie for 109th alongside Adam Scott.
Martin had an up-and-down round.
In his 18 holes he made just six pars. He mixed seven birdies with five bogeys and rallied from two-over par after 11 holes to make four birdies in his final seven holes.
He sits alongside Marc Leishman on the leaderboard.
Playing his first competitive tournament for a month, Herbert had one double bogey, three bogeys and one birdie in his opening 18 holes.
Herbert will be hoping for calmer conditions on Friday morning for his second round.
