UPDATE: This year will be a different Christmas for Lisa Chesters and Matt Emond.
The couple welcomed their new daughter - Daisy Jane Emond - on Tuesday morning.
"It's a new chapter and a new adventure," Ms Chesters said. "With this little one here it will be a different Christmas.
"There was some relief and excitement when she arrived, We couldn't help some tears. Now all those exciting milestones (that come with newborns) are coming up."
Mr Emond described the experience as extraordinary.
"It was fantastic, there is nothing more extraordinary than watching the birth of daughter and helping," he said.
"We are looking forward to getting home and getting to know each other as a family.
"As a dad, all you can do (during the birth) is be the best support you can. That's how we are in our relationship."
Ms Chesters said she arrived at Bendigo Health on Monday with Daisy being born on Tuesday morning.
"It was really positive. To be able to have your daughter in your home town with all the support here was wonderful," she said.
"The Bendigo Health team encourage partners to be a part of it. It was great for me to have Matt there but everyone has been inclusive - the midwives, doctors and registrars are fantastic.
EARLIER: Lisa Chesters has given birth to a baby girl.
The Member for Bendigo and her partner, Bendigo councillor Matt Emond, welcomed their first child at 4.59am on Tuesday.
The girl, named Daisy Jane Emond, was born at Bendigo Hospital and weighs 2.98kg or 6 pounds, 5 ounces in the old measure.
Ms Chesters and baby Daisy are both in good health and doing well.
The new parents thanked the fantastic staff at Bendigo Health for their attention and care over the past couple of days.
Ms Chesters announced her pregnancy in June.
"Matt and I are just really excited and feel very fortunate to be in Bendigo and to be going through this journey together," she said at the time.
"We've got such a wonderful family and friends network, and feel incredibly supported."
In October, she sought leave from parliamentary sittings but worked locally until late November.
Ms Chesters' return date is flexible, depending on the health and wellbeing of both mother and baby. Her office will do the bulk of the work locally while she was on leave, including running the Christmas toy drive.
"People should still feel free to contact my office at any time," Ms Chesters said in October.
"In Canberra, other MPs will step in and do committee work as required."
