CASTLEMAINE premiership player Don Moran has taken over as Magpies coach after Angus Monfries stood down.
Monfries, who was a star recruit for the Magpies this year, had been announced as their 2020 coach last month.
"It's one of those things that hasn't worked out as far as Angus coaching next year... that's footy," Castlemaine committee member Derrick Filo said on Friday.
"He was fantastic for us on and off the field this year and he leaves us with our best wishes.
"Our attitude now is to very much look forward rather than look back. We're rapt to have Donny on board as coach and we'll support him 100 per cent."
Moran was a member of Castlemaine's 1992 premiership team - as was Filo - and has been an assistant for the past three years.
"Don was a champion country player in the '90s and is a Castlemaine local," Filo said.
"He has been involved as an assistant over the past three years and has a really good understanding of the challenges we face.
"But he has really good ideas on how to take the club forward. We're going to have a real emphasis on developing our local talent this year."
Moran takes on the coaching role at Castlemaine with the Magpies having been winless this year with an average losing margin of 105 points and their three best players having departed in Monfries, best and fairest Matt Filo (Eaglehawk) and inter-league representative Jake O'Brien (Gisborne).
"Obviously, there will be player turnover like most clubs do and we always knew that was going to be the case for us," Filo said.
"We know we're chasing our tail a bit, but the positive is the leadership group led by our captain David Stephens and John Watson has really stood up through this period and we've got more local players signed than we did this time last year.
"We've got a larger committee with some young, energetic people on it, so the past couple of weeks have really galvanised the club."
The Magpies have a new president in Caleb Kuhle, who has taken over from Michael Blake.
Castlemaine has also appointed Jason Anderson to the role of junior development manager.
Meanwhile, having come out of retirement in his 50s and kicking two goals in the Magpies' round 18 game against South Bendigo this year, Filo says there will be no chance he will be pulling the boots back on at any stage again next season.
"That won't be happening again... I've got four kids playing sport, so I'll be watching a fair bit of them next year," Filo said.
Castlemaine, which last played senior finals in 2005, had been co-coached this year by Shawn and Derrick Filo.
Shawn has been appointed co-coach of Central Murray league club Lake Boga alongside Mitch Hough, who was also at Castlemaine this year, but his season was soured by injury.
