Wehruning, who grew up in Korweinguboora near Daylesford, believes the team's 2-4 start to the season was not a major concern.
"As a team it's probably easier to grow during a season when you have a slower start," Wehrung said.
"It gives us time to build on things instead of jumping out of the gates at full speed and hitting hurdles later in the season.
"As a team, we know that we can compete and we have the group to do it.
"We're going to keep working and growing together, we will get better.
"It's just about playing four consistent quarters."
Last weekend the team had a mixed weekend.
On Friday night in front of a home crowd at the Bendigo Stadium, the Spirit defeated the Adelaide Lightning by 13 points, final scores 67-54.
Wehrung top scored with 16 points and was named as the match MVP.
"We were happy to get the win, some nice shots dropped for me, but generally the win was a nice thing for the team," Wehrung said.
The Spirit then hit the road for a trip to Melbourne to play the Southside Flyers, but went down by 13 points, final scores 80-93.
"It was a disappointing loss on Sunday, but we did show a lot of potential in the third quarter," Wehrung said.
"Unfortunately defensively, we didn't put in an effort strong enough in the final quarter."
The Spirit's scoring was led by Becca Tobin (16), Kelly Wilson (15) and Wehrung (13).
Looking back on her career so far in the WNBL, Wehrung is happy with her progression from when she first started out with the Canberra Capitals in 2014.
"I had just turned 18 when I started out and since then I have a lot more experience and confidence in my ability," Wehrung said.
"I also now play a bigger role on teams compared to when I was a little tacker," she laughed.
