A bespoke home that includes walks in a garden with a Kevin Walsh influence (of ABC's Gardening fame) and a vista of Harcourt's lichen dusted, magnificent granite rocks is pretty special.
Such a setting appreciates dwellings that blend well, and that have been thoughtfully planned. Like architect Michael Sheppard's unusual shapes, resulting in a floor plan of warps and weaves, and unusual curved shapes, plus an external rendered decorative finish.
Designed like three open umbrellas, he used 33 metal poles to support the roof with, and the tenets of boat building for the unusual shapes, resulting in a home that sits as light as a butterfly in the landscape.
With 27 squares of space, there are three bedrooms and flowing open-plan living. It is a comfortable and stylish home for sure, but then the architect's exquisite care nudges you gently to take note of just what makes it so special. Like the 43 windows, the five seamless entry points, and the 360 degree views from most rooms.
The owners always had an eye for the unusual, like the pantry cum cellar in the centre of the home, a walled kitchen garden, and the shed which has incorporated two large water tanks in its corrugated walls, all reflecting their taste for design.
Perhaps it is the many tree plantings that will be one of the lasting legacies here. A combination of Landcare folk, friends and neighbours, planted over 300 redgums and natives, which have prospered and self-seeded, and now provide ample shade and corridors for the wildlife. The climate is one of the many delights too, but if you're thinking cold apple country, think again as this home at 500 metres is just above the frost line.
