Those who braved the mercurial weather were rewarded with bursts of sunshine and an array of activities and attractions at the Prince of Wales Showgrounds.
Members of the Farnsworth, Burt and Spencer families travelled to Bendigo to enjoy invaluable time together.
Parents and grandparents supervised as younger members of the family took up the challenge of dart throwing.
For their efforts, they won the satisfaction of popping colourful balloons and taking home a number of cute and cuddly prizes.
"It's always a good day - the kids love it," Danielle Burt said.
She said family members had travelled because they preferred the Bendigo show, with all its rides and events, to the one back home.
Others came for the competitions, like Carrie Florance and two-year-old Toggenburg goat Kayla.
Racing pigs were among the popular indoor attractions in the morning.
Other program highlights - like fireworks, a ute competition and a motocross display - are scheduled to take place this evening.
Showbag Warehouse's Lara Danielsen said there were many more people on Saturday morning than there had been the same time the day prior.
Food trader Bella Nocen said the morning was a bit slow, on account of the rain, but things were picking up by about 11am.
Bendigo Agricultural Show Society's Ian Furze said it had been a very successful show, with elements like the annual show of the Victorian state branch of dairy goats attracting exhibitors from as far away as Rockhampton.
An extra dog show on Friday also boosted the number of canine competitors, with an estimated 1500 dogs through the show.
Entries in cookery competitions and crafts categories were also higher.
"Weather was a small factor for us this year," Mr Furze said.
But he said the effects were mostly isolated to motocross, with riders unable to perform aspects of their routines until the weather conditions improved on Saturday evening.
"The mornings were a little bit affected by weather," Mr Furze said.
Attendee numbers for this year's show are not yet known.
