But the way her face lit up at the sight of family and friends was a present in itself for those attending her 100th birthday celebrations.
Loved ones made a point of marking the milestone.
The entry to Mrs Tupper's room was marked with balloons, as was the event space.
Friends came bearing freshly cut flowers, and a toddler intercepted Mrs Tupper on her way to be photographed to present her with a sandwich.
A birthday was not something Mrs Tupper said she generally liked to make a fuss of, for herself.
"I've always taken a back seat," she said.
Ever humble, she had mixed feelings about being the centre of attention.
She might have been celebrating a 100th birthday, but Mrs Tupper was not the oldest person to partake in the festivities.
Eaglehawk stalwart Harold 'Wicky' Toma, 103, was among the event's attendees.
