POLICE were forced to tell a driver they had entered a blocked traffic lane as officers worked to clear a crash on the McIvor Highway.
Officers were keeping the lane clear so that they and a tow truck driver could operate safely.
It happened as heavy traffic heading out of the city centre on McIvor Road banked up to the Chapel Street roundabout.
The lane had been partially blocked by a police motorcycle so that officers and a tow truck operator could safely load up two cars damaged in the crash, Leading Senior Constable Brendan Keegan said.
"People are just adamant. We had areas blocked off but they still wanted to get around us," he said.
The driver was not pulled over, but police pointed out her error as she waited for a green light next to two cars that had crashed at the intersection of Sternberg Street.
The crash was caused when one driver failed to give way as it turned onto the intersection and hit the back of another.
"It wasn't a case of disobeying the lights. They both had the same coloured lights. So it's failing to give way to oncoming traffic," LSC Keegan said.
A woman in her mid-20s will be be issued a traffic infringement notice, he said.
A man in his 70s was assessed by paramedics at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
