Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic said the fire took place at Holy Cross Primary School on Hamilton Road about 6.45pm on Monday.
He said a large pile of trees and grass cuttings had been assembled, ready to be burnt off.
"Three or four young teens appear to have lit a fire," Detective Sergeant Bobetic said.
He said CFA attended and put the fire out.
"The fire was contained and there was no risk to property," Detective Sergeant Bobetic said.
The CFA safely burnt off the pile of debris.
The detective sergeant said there were no injuries and no damage to school property, but the lighting of fires was of concern, especially as warmer weather approached.
He urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
