Lead artist Reece Hendy said the new mural at the Bull Street and Hargreaves Street intersection attracted a lot of attention over the weekend.

"I guess the meaning I give it is that white represents the quartz reefs that helped build the town hall and Bendigo," he said.

"The blue, to me, is very organic and flowing. Personally, I think its about human intervention on those reefs, of mining into them and building above them.

"But the great thing about abstract art is that it's not about telling people what to think or how to interact with it. They can come up with their own ideas."

The City of Greater Bendigo hopes the artwork will encourage people to get out of their cars and give traders more opportunities to entice them into stores, senior strategic planner Phillip DeAraugo said.

"We think it will prompt drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists in a busy part of the city," he said.

The work was a collaboration between Bendigo street art collective Nacho Station and Melbourne artist Chehehe.

They invited members of the public to come and help install the mural over the weekend, Mr Hendy said, with Chehehe conducting a number of workshops and other community art events while in town.
