BENDIGO and South Bendigo both escaped with three-shot victories in a pair of thrillers to open the BBD weekend pennant season on Saturday.

The South Bendigo v Kangaroo Flat match-up was a keenly-anticipated clash given the strong recruiting by both sides during the off-season and it duly delivered.

South Bendigo prevailed 89-86 in a contest where it had three rinks up.

In what was an entertaining tussle featuring a pair of recruits skipping, South's Gary Downie edged out Flat's David Keenan 26-24 in the closest of the rinks.

South's Liam Crapper and Flat's Cameron Wilson also played out a tight encounter, with Crapper coming out on top 24-21.

The only points Kangaroo Flat took from the match was Barry Anset's 24-16 victory over Luke Hoskin.

* Bendigo edged past Castlemaine 88-85 at home in what was a clash where no more than four shots separated three of the rinks.

Bendigo had three winning rinks skippered by Mitch Hocking (+3), Andrew Brown (+4) and Torie Babitsch (+3).

The best performed of the Castlemaine rinks was that of long-time skipper Rod Phillips, which defeated Lawrence Brooks 27-20.

* Golden Square was unable to replicate its round one upset of 12 months earlier against Eaglehawk.

The Hawks on their home green defeated Golden Square by 11 shots, 103-92.

Both teams won two rinks apiece, with the decisive result that gave Eaglehawk the upper hand Simon Carter's 29-14 victory over Garri Conforti.

* Bendigo East began its premiership defence in ominous style with a blowout 34-shot win over Inglewood at home that has the Beasties the first team for the season to occupy top spot.

The Beasties had all four rinks up, the most dominant of which was skipper Brad Marron.

Marron dished out a 35-18 hiding to Daryl Rowley, while the closest of the battles was Marc Smith's four-shot victory over Lindsay Kelly, 27-23.

Having copped the reigning premiers in round one, it doesn't get any easier for Inglewood in round two when it hosts last season's runners-up, Eaglehawk.
