It took nearly four years, but yesterday nine Bendigonians were recognised for the bravery displayed during the Kangaroo Flat siege.
The six police officers and three civilians, two who still live within a stone's throw of the scene of the siege, formally received their National Bravery Decorations from Governor of Victoria John Landy yesterday, two months after the honours were announced.
Four police officers were shot and seriously injured on the night of October 1, 1999, when they responded to a siege in High Street.
Two of the injured men, Sergeant Peter Lukaitis and Detective Senior Constable Craig Miller received the Bravery Medal for going to the aid of fellow officers Senior Constable Peter Eames and Inspector Ulf Kaminski.
Sergeant Tony Commadeur and civilians Mary-Ann Beckmans, Hendrikus Beckmans and Harold Stirton also received the honour for their roles on the night.
