Director and drama teacher Jess Kidd said Annie was an iconic musical for many people.
"Annie is one of those plays that is classic and full of joy, we wanted to focus on that," she said.
"Thge musical is an opportunity for students to have a real experience of performing in front of an audience.
"They get an idea of what it is like in the theatre industry. Even if they are not going to follow on with drama, it gives them skills that mean there are able to work as part of a team in an environment where you are collaborating with a lot of people."
Fifteen-year-old Charlotte Fredericks, who plays Annie, is no stranger to centre stage having taken up drama in 2012.
"Drama is a great way to experience a different sort of creativity. It's a great outlet," she said. "I like coming back each year because every year is something different. It is always new and exciting.
"Annie's character is also looking on the hopeful side and I like the general Idea about the sun coming out tomorrow - even if it's a bit cheesy."
Annie is on at VCC on Thursday and Friday from 7pm. For tickets visit www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=543843&
