POLICE believe the victim of a fatal crash at Marong was a man in his 50s from Queensland.
The man was a passenger in a tow truck, which crashed on the Wimmera Highway near Wilsons Hill about 3.30am on Sunday morning. He died at the scene.
The driver was taken to Bendigo Hospital in a serious condition. Police believe he is also a man in his 50s from Queensland.
It is the 215th death on Victorian roads this year. Police have urged drivers to slow down, take a break and not drive while drug or alcohol affected, saying the road toll is "unbelievable".
Major Collisions Investigation Unit Sergeant Col Schmidt said police were investigating whether or not fatigue, speed, and alcohol and drugs may have caused the crash.
He said police were still making inquiries about the identity of the deceased man.
Sergeant Schmidt said the tow truck appeared to have been travelling north when it veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree.
He said there were two males in the truck at the time.
Sergeant Schmidt said a passing motorist came across the carnage at about 3.30am.
She found a man stumbling around obviously injured when she got out to investigate, and contacted emergency services.
Sergeant Schmidt said police were still trying to determine exactly what time the crash happened. He said CCTV footage from neighbouring premises might be able to give police an idea of the time.
He said it was too early to determine whether any charges would be laid over the crash. Police have yet to speak to the driver of the truck.
Sergeant Schmidt said police were urging all motorists to slow down, take their time and think about what they were doing on the roads.
Fifty-five more people have died on Victorian roads than at the same time in 2018.
Twenty-five of those people have died on central Victorian roads.
Sergeant Schmidt said the number of deaths took its toll both on emergency service workers and communities.
"We're out there dealing with all this carnage all the time, and all we ask is that people slow down and take their time," Sergeant Schmidt said.
"It'll reduce the incidence of us coming out, and the ripple effect that goes through the community in relation to these tragedies.
"It's heartbreaking for persons involved, you've got emergency services that come out. And it's just a flow on effect throughout the community. People are being touched by these tragedies every day."
