Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon have all been rested following heavy workloads during Australia's tour of England, while Test aspirant Kurtis Patterson (quad) will miss the clash with the Bulls from Thursday.

Mitchell Starc will join Warner and Smith though, who both return to the Shield arena for the first time since their ball tampering bans ruled them out last summer.

Their last outings came in November 2017, also against Queensland.

Fellow Ashes tourists Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser have been named for Queensland, while towering Billy Stanlake is also a chance of playing just his fifth first-class game.

In-form Blues batsman Daniel Hughes will look to transfer his form to the longer format as one contender hoping to make the most of four Shield rounds before the summer's first Test against Pakistan at the Gabba from November 21.

Hughes amassed 742 Shield runs last season and is the the leading one-day run-scorer this season, with 300 from four matches at an average of 100.

Defending champions Victoria host South Australia and Western Australia play Tasmania in the other games.
