A STAFF member has been taken to hospital following an incident at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.
The incident occurred shortly after 1pm today.
"As with all incidents or allegations of violence or assault, the matter has been referred to Victoria Police," a Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said.
"Violent behaviour or assaults at youth justice centres are absolutely unacceptable, and the safety of staff, young people and the community is of the utmost importance."
They said new laws were in effect that strengthened consequences for young people who assaulted youth justice custodial workers, damaged property, and escaped or tried to escape.
"This includes a presumption they will serve their sentences on top of an existing period of detention," the spokesperson said.
