A MAN injured after a car struck a tree in Mandurang at the weekend remains in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
1.30pm
Bendigo Highway Patrol officer Mick McCrann has warned that people are still dying on the road even with less cars because of the pandemic.
He is encouraging drivers to stay safe after the third serious car crash in five days on the outskirts of Bendigo.
Sergeant McCrann said that there were key differences among the crashes, particularly one on Saturday morning when a pedestrian was hit by a car.
"I can't see a nexus between them, but regardless of COVID-19 serious collisions and fatalities do continue to happen happen," he said.
"Just because we are under some form of (social distancing) restrictions doesn't mean we are immune from road trauma."
Two fatalities in Bendigo, days apart:
Police have called for anyone with information on Saturday's Kangaroo Flat collision to contact crime stoppers.
A 40-year-old Kangaroo Flat man is believed to have left his taxi after a dispute about the fare early Saturday morning.
A second car has then hit him.
Sergeant McCrann paid tribute to the emergency service workers who came together to help free the 53-year-old trapped in this morning's crash.
"The air ambulance paramedics have commented that the work of the fire the SES crews were particularly fine," he said.
"They did a great job sharing equipment and working together. The air paramedics were really impressed by that."
A 26-year-old man died in Lockwood on Wednesday after his car left the road and hit a tree.

AN AIR ambulance will soon leave the scene with a North Bendigo man who was pulled from a car crash in Mandurang a short time ago.
He will be taken in a serious condition.
Crews spent an hour freeing the man, who is believed to be 53-years-old, from a silver HSV Sedan that left the road and collided with a tree.
His legs were pinned by the force of the crash.
He was conscious when emergency service crews arrived but police officers said he was "very fortunate" not to have been killed instantly, given the extensive damage to the car.
They are only just beginning their investigation into what caused the crash.
SES and CFA crews are packing up and preparing to leave the scene, which is several hundred metres south of the Mandurang sports oval.
