A HAZARDOUS gas leak in Castlemaine has been made safe.
Update, 11.53am:
EMERGENCY services are still responding to a gas leak at Castlemaine.
A spokesperson for the gas company, AusNet Services, said a third party was excavating when they hit a main this morning.
"AusNet Services are on site making it safe," they said.
It is not yet known when the situation will be resolved.
Update, 11.09am:
CASTLEMAINE residents have been advised to remain indoors following a gas leak.
"There is no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions," the CFA said in a message issued shortly after 11am.
"Emergency services will remain in the area as they monitor the incident."
The advice message said the incident was occurring in the vicinity of Forest Street.
It advised people to avoid the area.
Anyone experiencing symptoms that might be due to exposure were recommended to seek medical advice or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.
The CFA said anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should call Triple Zero (000).

EMERGENCY services are responding to a gas leak at Castlemaine.
The gas leak is affecting train services on the Bendigo line, with V/Line advising of delays and alterations to services.
The Castlemaine Railway Station was evacuated, but V/Line said trains would start moving through the area shortly.
"Residual delays and service alterations are to be expected," the regional rail operator advised in a tweet.
Bendigo Advertiser reporter Elspeth Kernebone said there was a smell of gas in the air.
Police and firefighters are among the services responding.
Emergency services received reports of a gas leak at Kennedy Street shortly after 9am.
Castlemaine Railway Station is on Kennedy Street.
Road closures were in place near the train station.
Train services affected include the 10.20 Epsom - Southern Cross line, which will originate from Kyneton.
In a tweet, V/Line advised customers to listen to announcements and staff as services might be altered on short notice.
The nearby Castlemaine Child Care Centre had been in lockdown for about an hour and a half at the time of writing.
Assistant director Rebecca Buchanan said the children were all safe and well.
The child care centre has yet to be advised of when to expect the situation to be resolved.
