THE majority of players in a squad of 50 representing AFL Central Victoria at a recent indigenous and multicultural primary school carnival day enjoyed their first taste of football.
The carnival was held in Ballarat and featured teams from Bendigo, Ballarat and Melton.
"Other than a handful of students, this was their first experience playing football. And for some within the group this was their first time playing organised sport as they had only recently migrated to Australia and never had the opportunity," AFLCV football development manager Jake McLean said.
"The group featured students from many different cultures and backgrounds, boys and girls, both English and non-English speaking, coming together to participate on the day. As the day progressed it was fantastic to see the improvement in the group and enjoyment they had playing the game."
The two squads were coached by Jordan Knight and Jordan Hynes.
