Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said very cold air came up over Victoria on Monday, which meant there was a chance of snow down to 700 metres.
Mr Stewart said it was not uncommon to receive snow in early spring, when Victoria still experienced cold bursts of air.
The weather will begin to warm up again between now and Friday, he said, but more cool weather was on the way at the weekend.
Mr Stewart said this meant the alpine areas could see some more snow.
Parts of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory also received snow falls at the start of the week.
