Medical group Doctors for the Environment Australia met with Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt on Monday to deliver pledges on ways to protect children's health against global warming.

Bendigo Sustainability Group Vice President Graham Allardice, who worked in the health sector, said the strong stance was promising.

"It's got to be good," he said. "The health impacts of climate change are often too underplayed or not covered all together.

"Research is beginning to show those impacts are greater than people have previously considered."

A spokesperson for Doctors for the Environment Australia said climate change exposed children to greater risk of respiratory illness, which would lead to increases in childhood emergency department visits for asthma, fever, gastroenteritis, and heat stroke.

"Children's bodies and minds are still developing," spokesperson Ingo Weber said. "Long after the fires have gone the mental scars remain."

The lobbying in Canberra comes a week after the Australian Medical Association called climate change a health emergency.

The AMA joined the stance of other medical associations around the world, including the American Medical Association and the British Medical Association.

Mr Allardice said it was promising that scientists from across the sector were speaking openly about the health impacts of climate change.

"Climate scientists have been talking about the affects of climate change for years," he said. "But we're now seeing the affects of climate change being recognised by scientists at many levels and across many disciplines.

"Politicians who continue to ignore that do so at the community's risk."
