There have been 192 people who have died on Victorian roads in 2019 - up from 133 people at the same time last year. Twenty-one of those deaths have been on central Victorian roads.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said as part of Operation Argus, officers would be highly visible across the state targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, seatbelt offences and driver distraction.

There would also be a focus on country and regional roads.

"Road trauma doesn't discriminate and we have seen that time and time again - we just can't afford to take gambles on the road," Assistant Commission Leane said.

"We're taking road safety seriously and we need Victorian motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to do the same."

Operation Argus will run from Thursday, September 5 until Sunday, September 8.
