State Highway Patrol officers were travelling on the McIvor Highway just before midnight when a car passed them at 160 km/h in the 70 km/h zone.
They intercepted the driver, a P1 probationary licence holder, who returned a breath test of 0.128.
The man is expected to be charged on summons with drink and drug-driving offences, speeding, and driving at a speed dangerous.
His vehicle was impounded for 30 days, at a cost to him of $1425.
"Our unit is making an impact on rural road trauma but clearly there is more work to be done," Sergeant Paul Emmanouel said.
