COMMUNITY EVENTS
VIETNAM VETERANS DAY
This day of remembrance, originally known as Long Tan Day, commemorates all who served and died in Vietnam.
Now known as Vietnam Veterans Day, this weekend will remember.
There will be a service at the memorabilia garden, with veterans gathering to take part in a march prior to the service at 10.45am. The service will follow afterwards.
A private lunch gathering of the Vietnam Veterans Association will follow on the rear terrace. Bistro bookings can be made by calling the venue on 03 5442 2950

MS MEGA SWIM
Join in for one of Australia's most popular fundraising events this weekend.
Gather your friends and family and head to Kangaroo Flat for the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 24-Hour Mega Swim.
People of all ages and abilities can take part in this event with swims available for 10 minutes or up to four hours, just ensuring a team member is in the pool for 24 hours.
Cost: adults $45, juniors $35.

FAMILY HISTORY GROUP
The Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies is hosting its August meeting at the weekend.
The event will also include guest speaker, Peter Ball, who will present The History of the Bendigo and District RSL Museum.
Peter was a voluntary curator at the museum for more than 18 years and is a life member.
He will address the meeting on the evolution of the museum from 1996 to the opening in 1998.
He will also cover the restoration and reopening in November 2018.
All interested persons are invited to attend this event.
Stay for a cup of tea and feel welcome to join in the meeting.

150TH SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY
This Sunday will celebrate 150 years of the Talbot Primary School and education in the town.
The event will include various displays, school artefacts, tours and many special guests.

FAMILY BUSH DANCE
The Bush Dance and Music Club will host another great family dance at the weekend.
Dances on the program will be the old-time and bush dances, with upbeat music by the Emu Creek Bush Band.
The event also features a raffle and a lucky door prize.
A plate of supper to share would be appreciated.

HUMANS 2.0
Hosted by La Trobe University and Bendigo Tech School, this event will allow attendees to experience what it will mean to be a human in the next century.
This story event will run over two sessions and feature future artefacts and prototypes. There will be new modes of communication, sports and possible transports for future humans.
Experts will be on-site, answering questions and speaking about what is in store for future humans.
Where: Bendigo Tech School, Level 3, Engineering and Technology Building La Trobe University, Sharon Street, Bendigo.
When: Tuesday, August 20, 4pm-6pm children and families, 7pm-9pm humans after dark for over 18-year-olds.
PROMENADE SERIES
The St Paul's Promenade Series has run over the past two weeks, allowing for audiences to hear some of Bendigo's finest musicians live.
This weekend, in the last of the series, Wil Rigby will take audiences on a solo flute journey through time, featuring works from Bach, Kuhlau, Ferroud and Clarke.
The event will also include Ms Jackson and Me, a three-piece jazz band, performing songs from the 1930s-1950s.
Bendigo Chorale, who are celebrating more than 60 years, will also present choral songs of love, loss and celebration.

SATURDAY DANCE
Enjoy this toe-tapping event at a warm hall, with great music and even better company.
This dance event will feature music by Cheryl Bailey, a good program and a delicious home-cooked supper.
There will also be a raffle and prizes. Admission is $9, all welcome.

EXHIBITIONS
BALENCIAGA: SHAPING FASHION
World-class couture has come back to town, with the Bendigo Art Gallery opening their newest exhibition, Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion this weekend.
This exhibition showcases the growth and works of designer Cristobel Balenciaga and his legacy of the modern designers he influenced.
The exhibition will feature contemporary designs by the house of Balenciaga, with video footage that shows historic garments morphing into modern interpretations.

DESERT LINES
Desert Lines: Batik from Central Australia brings together about 60 selected works from the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.
The works show the unique and distinct batik styles (a method of wax resist fabric printing) of five central desert communities: Ernabella (Pukatja), Fregon (Kaltjiti), Utopia, Yuendumu and Kintore (Walungurru).
This exhibition will showcase the batik work for women of the desert and it's importance. It will also show interconnected through ceremony, travel and much more.

MANY SUCH AS SHE
Museum curator, Kirsten McKay, is excited to be hosting this exhibition, Many Such As She, which profiles more than 15 biographies of women poets, alongside items from the military collection.
Central Victorian poet and critic, Michael Sharkey began researching the poets' responses to the Great War many years ago, with an interest to find out why so little had been collected and why it was so long neglected.
Michael edited the collection of women's poetry for his recent publication, Many Such As She, after discovering some fascinating stories
For the exhibition, Kirsten has negotiated the loan of a suite of original poetry publications from the State Library of Victoria - Rare Books Department.

NGARDANG GIRRI KALAT MIMI
This exhibition is the first of its kind in Australia, curated by Georgina MacGuire.
It will be an opportunity to see quality and uniqueness of Indigenous culture and the art practices of women connected to different tribes of Victoria.
These works will promote unique art practices and have a particular focus on women located within the region.

FLIGHTS OF FANTASY
This exhibition presents a selection of work from three artists, combining photo montage, art jewellery and fashion pieces.
The featured artists are illustrator Lorena Carrington, Milton Long and costume designer Ulrike Barbara Von Radichevich.
The works will be presented in the Living Arts Space, a gallery that presents a range of exhibitions and public art programs, showcasing the region's emerging and professional artists.
