The match was evenly contested during the first three quarters, but the Tigers broke away in the last.
The Tigers booted five goals in the fourth quarter, overcoming the Magpies one-point lead.
"It was an evenly contested game and it came down to the effort in the last quarter," Tigers' coach Luke Beattie said.
In addition to some help from a "slight breeze", Beattie said the team's structures and traditions had built over the day with it all coming together in the last quarter.
"Once we got a couple goals in front of them the boys put up the contest and held the margin," Beattie said.
"One of the stronger points of both clubs is that we're both great in the one-on-one contest across the ground.
"But once we controlled the ball and had some patience around the ground we found some open players."
The Tigers led 3.6 (24) over 2.2 (14) in the first, 6.9 (45) over 5.3 (33) at half time before the Magpies came back to lead 9.6 (60) over 8.11 (59) going into the last quarter.
Magpies coach Ben Lavars said the Tigers moved the ball well and "ran over the top of us in the end".
"They were just the better side on the field, their prime movers Rhys Magin, Hamish Govan and Max O'Sullivan used the ball really well," Lavars said.
Tigers goalkicking was led by Magin with three, with the Magpies Matt Bilton also booting three.
Tigers best on ground was led by O' Sullivan and Magin.
Beattie said O'Sullivan was the integral to the fourth quarter breakaway.
"He was the igniter going into the mid-field with some nice clearance work."
Magpies on ground efforts were led by Bilton and Jordan Fraser.
