READ MORE - Jye Caldwell's sporting pathway to the AFL Draft
FORMER Golden Square product and Bendigo Pioneer draftee Jye Caldwell is making his AFL debut for the GWS Giants against Hawthorn at a freezing Canberra tonight.
Caldwell was a late inclusion into the Giants side for the injured Jacob Hopper (hamstring).
Caldwell was selected by the Giants with pick No.11 in last year's National Draft and is the 97th player to play for the club.
He began the game in the centre square and has made a solid start with several early touches in a game that has featured snow falling in the first quarter.
Caldwell is the second Bendigo Pioneer draftee in as many weeks to make his AFL debut after Angus Schumacher played his first game for Carlton against West Coast last Sunday.
Meanwhile, five Bendigo Pioneer players have been named in the Vic Country squad for a Futures Match on Sunday against NSW/ACT.
The Pioneers will be represented by the quintet of Josh Treacy, Jack Hickman, Seamus Mitchell, Finn Ellis Castle and Jack Ginnivan.
Sam Conforti is also in the squad, but will be rested for this weekend's match, while Pioneers' assistant Danny O'Bree is a line coach for the match to be played at Ikon Park from 9.45am.
The Futures games highlight impressive NAB League Boys players who are eligible for next year's AFL National Draft.
