The Business of the Year Award - presented by the Bendigo Bank - is given to an "all-rounder" company that stands out against all other finalists.
McKean McGregor was originally nominated for the professional service award, a category it also won.
Be.Bendigo chair Marika McMahon was not surprised the company did so well.
"McKean McGregor could have stuck with a traditional business model, but they've spun it in so many ways," she said.
"They've built it on great client relations, a great team, really good use of social media. All of those things show that you can build a really successful business and get the rewards from reinventing yourself."
More news:
The stock and station company had found ways to diversify and protect itself from market shifts, Ms McMahon said.
"There's a really fabulous mix of businesses that have been recognised (with awards)," Ms McMahon said.
"We have those individual mum-and-dad type businesses, we have new businesses and others that have been around for a while.
"We also have a terrific new category this year focused on events. The finalists included the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Bendigo on the Hop and the blues and roots festival.
"I think that is a great symbol of what happens in Bendigo."
