Jack Tresize pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Thursday to possessing three unregistered firearms.
Police became aware Tresize possibly owned the firearms after intercepting communications between him and a person he knew, who was the target of the investigation.
Police found the shortened firearms at his house.
Defence lawyer Nicholas Rolfe told the court one of the firearms had always been at the house, which Tresize shared with his grandmother.
Mr Rolfe said the others were in a box that a friend gave to him for safekeeping, but he later died.
Magistrate John Bentley said that while Tresize was not accused of any other crimes, it was a worry when firearms were shortened because such weapons were not used for hunting or target shooting, but by criminals.
He convicted and fined Tresize $1500.
