Police don't believe the fire that resulted in the death of a North Bendigo woman is supicious.
"At this stage we don't believe it is suspicious and, unfortunately, was an accidental fire," Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Stewart said.
"We will be preparing a report for the coroner."
Update, July 24, 4.10pm:
The Department of Health and Human Services is liaising with authorities to provide information which might assist in the investigation into the woman's death.
A woman with a disability died after a fire in the unit on Tuesday night. The Director of Housing owns the unit.
A department spokesperson said the unit had four smoke alarms installed, which were subject to regular compliance tests.
The unit was built in September 2015. A Certificate of Electrical Compliance was issued by the licensed electrician who completed the electrical installation.
The spokesperson passed on the department's condolences to the woman's family and friends.

Police are yet to establish the cause of the fire that resulted in the death of a woman overnight.
Detective Senior Constable Andrew Hazelwood said police would consider all possibilities in their investigation.
"Police are investigating a fire that occurred last night. Unfortunately it resulted in the death of the occupant," he said.
"It's early days of the investigation and all circumstances will be treated as possible.
"The Arson Squad have investigated and arson chemists have attended (the scene) for initial investigations. Further investigation will be conducted to ultimately establish how the fire started."
Detective Senior Constable Andrew Hazelwood said emergency services were alerted to the fire after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm and contacted Triple-0.
Neighbour Peter Hutchinson said he tried to save the woman from the fire.
He tried to access the house through the back door but found the fire too intense.
"There was just too much smoke and the heat was intense," he said.
"The (back) sliding doors were open but it was just too intense to get in there. I got down on my hands and knees but just couldn't get in."

Neighbour Peter Hutchinson has described the woman who died after a house fire overnight as lovely.
"She was just a lovely, lovely lady, very nice, polite - she spoke to me every time she was out the front in her wheelchair," he said.
"It's a very big loss."
The woman's pets survived the blaze.
9.30am
A WOMAN with a disability has died in hospital after a unit fire in North Bendigo on Tuesday night.
The woman suffered burns and was in a critical condition when paramedics took her to Bendigo Hospital.
The woman was rescued by CFA firefighters from a burning home on Kookaburra Avenue at about 10pm.
Two firefighters with breathing apparatus gained entry to the unit from the rear, rescuing the woman.
She was brought to the front yard, where firefighters performed CPR until Ambulance Victoria arrived.
CFA District 2 Rostered Duty Officer Hugh Kelly commended the firefighters' efforts.
"Within a minute of arriving on scene, crews gained entry though the rear door," he said.
"Unfortunately, and despite the best efforts of all involved, the lady has later passed away."
The woman was believed to be in her 40s.

Detectives have arrived on the scene of a house fire that occurred in North Bendigo on Tuesday night.
They are door knocking house in the area as part of their investigation.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Wednesday, 6.15am
A WOMAN has died following a house fire in North Bendigo on Tuesday night.
Emergency services attended the property on Kookaburra Avenue just before 10pm.
They extinguished the fire and found a woman with serious injuries inside the home.
The woman, in her 40s, was taken to hospital where she later died.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Tuesday
A woman in her 40s has been taken to hospital with possible life threatening injuries following a house fire in North Bendigo.
Country Fire Authority crews, ambulance and police were called to the scene on Kookaburra Avenue just before 10pm on Tuesday.
The fire has been contained.
CFA are on scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
