The show's chief executive Margot Falconer said there was a five to seven per cent growth in attendance.
"On Saturday we had about 12,000 plus people (visit) which would be the biggest Saturday we've had," she said. "It's just been most marvelous event, which we couldn't do without the volunteers that help.
"We also had a record number of site holders though sheep numbers were down by about 100.
"Most of site holders did really good business, which is what it is about. They don't come for fun.
"Every year it's grown and it has just been fantastic. We explored (more) promotion this year and employed a local company to develop an app and employed another local company to do social media."
Ms Falconer said the loyal support of farmers had contributed to the success of the Australian Sheep and Wool Show.
"There was a farm from New South Wales that won a lot of ribbons," she said. "They came from a drought-stricken part of New South Wales and have had success.
"It's significant how much people think (highly) of the show. They rate this show so much and want to be here and be judged because it's all about growing their product."
Ms Falconer said Georgina Wallace from Trefusis Merino stud in Tasmania, who spoke at the Women of Wool event on Friday, said the show had evolved to become the high-quality event that it now is.
"She said when the show first came to Bendigo (from Melbourne), it was a little Victorian show (and that) in last 10 years it has evolved to become best sheep show in Australia, if not the world.
"It was music to my ears. She's speaking as a breeder saying this is the best show in Australia. It's all about the sheep but we have to create the rest to make it a show."
