Australia wide, about 707 people died out of each 100,000 every year between 2013 and 2017.

A report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has revealed the patterns of mortality within the nation's population.

Coronary heart disease, dementia and Alzheimer disease, cerebrovascular disease, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were the most common causes of death among all people, male and female.

This pattern was true of Greater Bendigo, the Central Goldfields, Loddon, Campaspe, the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander council areas.

Breast cancer was the sixth leading cause of death for women across Australia, while prostate cancer was sixth for men.

A total of 3.8 per cent of female deaths in Australia were caused by breast cancer - 14,489 deaths - between 2013 and 2017.

Prostate cancer caused four per cent of men's deaths - a total of 15,934 - during the same period.

Colorectal cancer and diabetes were the next most common cause of death for both men and women.

Men were significantly more likely to die by suicide than women. This was the ninth leading cause of death among men, the cause of 10,957 lives lost.

It was not among the 20 most common causes of death for women.

34 per cent of deaths in Australia were deemed premature deaths - those of people under the age of 75 - between 2013 and 2017.

Of these, 50.5 per cent were potentially avoidable.

A total of 963 people died in greater Bendigo during 2016, the highest number of the five years between 2013 and 2017.

On average 812.6 people per 100,000 died each year between 2013 and 2017 in Greater Bendigo.

About 32 per cent of these deaths were premature deaths, in which a person under the age of 75 died.

48.2 per cent of premature deaths were potentially avoidable.

The median age at of death was 81.6 years during the period in question.

An average of 174 people died each year in the Central Goldfields between 2013 and 2017.

The death rate peaked in 2016, when 219 people died.

80.7 was the median age of death in the shire area.

A total of 306 people under the age of 75 died in the Central Goldfields between 2013 and 2017, an average of 61 each year.

These premature deaths made up 35.2 per cent of total deaths in the shire during the period.

Nearly 53 per cent of these premature deaths were potentially avoidable.

Nearly 900 people died between 2013 and 2017 in the Mount Alexander Shire Council area.

An average of 179 people died in the shire each year.

Nearly 29 per cent of these were premature, 48.9 per cent of which were potentially avoidable.

The median age at death oscillated between 81, 82 and 83 for the shire during the period.

An average of 84 people died each year in the Loddon Shire area between 2013 and 2017.

This made up a total of 418 deaths during the period.

In 122 of these cases, the death was of someone under the age of 75.

About 51 per cent of these deaths were potentially avoidable.

The median age of those who died was 78.8 in the Loddon Shire.

364 people died on average every year between 2013 and 2017 in the Campaspe Shire Council area.

The median age of death was 81.5 during this period.

A total of 587 of these were premature deaths, making up 32.3 per cent of the total deaths.

51.5 per cent of premature deaths during this period in the Loddon area were potentially avoidable.

An average of 284 people died each year in the Macedon Ranges during the period.

81.2 was the median age of death in the area over the five years in question.

More than 33 per cent of deaths were premature in the Macedon Ranges between 2013 and 2017.

Approximately 47 per cent of the premature deaths were potentially avoidable.

Men were significantly more likely than women to die before they reached the age of 75 between 2013 and 2017.

41 per cent of male deaths were classed as premature, compared to 26.6 per cent of female.

Death rates were roughly stable, with a slight increase in 2016, during which 666.9 people per 100,000 died.

81 was the median age at death, comparable with the average across central Victoria. The median age at death was 78 for males, compared to 84 or 85 for females.
