SHEEP & LAMBS
BENDIGO
July 8.
Lamb numbers increased, with good runs of both crossbred and Merino lambs coming in off supplementary feed.
Competition between processors intensified for quality processor lambs to create a dearer market across the medium and heavy trade weight categories.
Good crossbred lambs gained $5 to $10/head, while Merinos with shape and fat cover showed bigger price improvements and were one of the highlights of the sale.
Plain and small lambs under 20kg cwt bucked the trend to be a cheaper, with quality a factor.
The market did post a new Bendigo record of $340 for extra heavy export lambs, beating last week's mark by $4/head.
Only limited pens of big export lambs and competition was irregular.
There were only three pens over $300, to the new dollar per head high of $340/head for an estimated 36kg cwt.
The strength of the market was across the medium and heavy trade weight lambs, with the lead runs consistently making from $220 to $280/head.
On a carcase basis these quality lambs were estimated to cost from 940c to just over 1,000c, with the key categories recording averages of 990c/kg.
There were some impressive Merino lambs off feed and these were strongly supported by processors, the heaviest pens reaching $270, as the good trade weights sold from $217 to $250/head.
The best of the Merino lambs were trending over 900c/kg cwt.
Quality has tailed off in the lighter weight lamb sections, with most small pen lots of clean-up lambs being sold.
Prices for lambs under 20kg cwt were generally cheaper.
Sheep numbers remained similar, and quality was again irregular, with good lines of Merino or crossbred ewes difficult to find across the yarding.
There were some modest price changes for heavy sheep, with not all exporters operating, but competition for trade weight mutton was very buoyant.
The pick of the trade weight sheep were costing processors over 600c/kg cwt.
