THE Bendigo Jockey Club's Golden Mile Raceday is in the running to be named Country Racing Victoria's Event of the Year.
Held earlier this year on March 30, the Golden Mile Raceday, which featured over $1 million in prize money, attracted the largest crowd in over five years, despite the cold and windy Saturday conditions.
"This is fantastic recognition for our dedicated team that work tirelessly all year around to ensure our members, sponsors and stakeholders have a memorable customer experience every time they attend a race meeting at the Bendigo racecourse," BJC chief executive officer Aaron Hearps said.
"This year's program was as strong as we've seen at Bendigo, resulting in a 40 per cent increase in wagering, surpassing the Melbourne Racing Club's Mornington Cup Day, which was held the week before."
The Golden Mile Raceday featured a nine-race card, with the headline race won by the Chris Waller-trained Haripour at odds of $19.
"The board and management team placed a great emphasis on growing the attendance for the Golden Mile Raceday, so we were delighted to record a 35 per cent year-on-year increase for the 2019 event," BJC chairman Rod Caldow said.
"To be nominated for CRV's event of the year is a great reward for the effort put in. We look forward to working with the racing industry to further increase prizemoney on this day and secure the raceday at the Bendigo racecourse for the foreseeable future."
The Country Racing Awards will be held in Melbourne on August 24.
