Woods leapt 4.50 metres to win silver in the under-18 pole vault.
Representing Regional Australia, Woods had a great duel with Australia's Ethan Princena-White who cleared the 4.60m mark.
On the track, Buchanan clocked a time of 14:19.53 to be third in the open 5000m.
It was a one-two result for New Zealand as Oli Chignell, 14:07.17, fought on to beat Matthew Baxter, 14:08.87.
Buchanan was the Australian 10km cross-country champion in 2017 and '18 and has starred at various track classics around the country.
From Kyabram, Woods competes with South Bendigo Athletics Club.
His campaign in Townsville rolls on in Wednesday afternoon's heats of the under-18 100m heats from 3.10pm.
Cohuna speedster Kye Mason, who competes with Eaglehawk AC, will also contest the under-18 100m.
On Thursday, Woods returns to the field for the under-18 high jump.
Swan Hill's Emma Berg will contest the under-20 shot put on Friday.
A star with South Bendigo Athletics Club, Berg achieved a mark of 14.24m to win the shot put final at this year's national titles in Sydney.
