Music director Cally Bartlett said the August competition shapes as the band's biggest performance this year.
"We tend to compete at the Bendigo Competitions every year then the state championships and every couple years the national competition," she said. "But this is the biggest one this year."
The band will learn four new pieces for the state competition after their win at the Bendigo Competitions Society eisteddfod recently.
"You never really know (how the results will go). We knew we had played quite well and had a great feeling as we left the stage," Ms Bartlett said.
"Because it's a comparison of band, it always depends on the other bands. It was a surprise in the end because we knew other bands had performed quite well."
Ms Bartlett said the City of Greater Bendigo Brass Band has 35 members, which is a healthy number. They are one of three brass bands in the Greater Bendigo area.
"Particularly at the community level, the support is fantastic," she said. "The members are not necessarily career musicians. They are just people with an interest.
"So it is nice to have a healthy band. My aim is to always have a happy band and try to make sure everyone is happy in their place.
"Contest wins come and go but it is the support of each (which is important)."
