A man is in a critical condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital after being hit by a car last night in Bendigo.
Police said the driver of the vehicle just didn't see the man, who was crossing Mitchell Street near Mollison Street at a lit pedestrian crossing.
"It's not a particularly well-lit intersection," Bendigo Sergeant Mark Bell said.
He said it was quite dark and raining at the time of the collision.
Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped and rendered assistance. They were issued a penalty notice for failing to give way.
Tuesday, 7.53am:
A man hit by a car on Mitchell Street last night has been transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man, in his 50s, was taken by road ambulance about 7.30pm yesterday.
The patient was initially taken to Bendigo Health with head injuries.
6:25pm: A male pedestrian has been taken to Bendigo hospital with suspected concussion after being hit by a car on Mitchell Street just before 6pm.
The man was walking across the zebra crossing near Mollison Street when he was struck by a white Ford.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police inquiries are continuing.
6:15pm: The traffic is now flowing again in both directions on Mitchell Street.
Earlier: Two ambulances and police are at the corner of Mitchell and Mollison Streets, Bendigo after an incident.
Police have blocked one lane of traffic on Mitchell Street heading towards the Bendigo Railway Station.
